Acoustic emission source localization is a promising monitoring technique for concrete structures. However, the accuracy of acoustic emission source localization is influenced by many factors, such as the presence of cracks, which are commonly observed in existing reinforced concrete structures. In this article, the acoustic emission source localization is evaluated using a numerical model with a total number of 11,827,200 independent simulated tests. In this work, the investigated influential factors include the presence of cracks, arrival time picking error, and senor layout. The accuracy of source localization is quantified by the characteristic error defined in this article. Using the proposed wave propagation properties, a relatively stable characteristic error of 150 mm is estimated in the detection zone with the maximum sensor spacing less than 1 m. The evaluation approach and simulated characteristic error are validated experimentally by comparing the 200 manually generated signals using hammer hits on a cracked concrete beam.

For estimating remaining fatigue life of RC bridge decks subjected to traveling wheel-type loads, presented is the data assimilation procedure, i.e., coupled life-span simulation with inspection data at site. Multi-scale analysis with hygro-mechanistic models is used for the platform of data assimilation on which the visual inspection of cracking on the members' surfaces and the acoustic emission (AE) tomography are numerically integrated. For verification, the wheel running load experiments of slabs were conducted with continuous data acquisition of both crack patterns and the acoustic emission data over the life till failure. Visually inspected cracks are converted to space-averaged strains, based on which the internal strains and damage fields are re-produced by numerical predictor-corrector cycles. The 3D field of elastic wave identified by AE tomography is also converted to the fracture parameter of concrete. Although no information on cracking is available, the proposed assimilation method successfully reproduces most probable internal cracks over the volume of analysis domains, and the remaining life of the deck slabs inspected was successfully estimated.

The authors have been studying NDT based techniques that have potential to exhibit damage not only qualitatively but quantitatively. In the paper, two major aspects contributing to the damage have been introduced: a prospective damage index representing real internal condition; and damage visualization techniques with an acoustic approach, namely AE tomography. For a prospective damage index, Q-value, an attenuation feature of stress wave and can be treated as an irrespective parameter of frequency is demonstrated using several types of specimens changing the volume of artificial damage. And as for an innovative and the latest NDT technology, 3D AE tomography, which can visualize the internal 3D damage evolution, only from one side access situation, is introduced, followed by experimental verification using RC slabs subjected to cyclic mobile loads.
