Visualization of a Lost Painting by Vincent van Gogh Using Synchrotron Radiation Based X-ray Fluorescence Elemental Mapping

Abstract: Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), one of the founding fathers of modern painting, is best known for his vivid colors, his vibrant painting style, and his short but highly productive career. His productivity is even higher than generally realized, as many of his known paintings cover a previous composition. This is thought to be the case in one-third of his early period paintings. Van Gogh would often reuse the canvas of an abandoned painting and paint a new or modified composition on top. These hidden paintings of… Show more

“…Indeed, the beam energy is determined with a resolution of 0.5 eV thanks to a fixed-exit, double-crystal Si(111) monochromator. XANES spectra at the Sb L I -edge probe directly the Sb oxidation state since the white line energy position for Sb III and Sb V compounds varies by 4.5 eV [16]. The micro-fluorescence signal is collected using an HPGe solid-state energy-dispersive detector [17].…”

“…C'est le cas de Van Gogh qui réutilisait ses propres oeuvres [5], ou de Picasso à qui il est arrivé d'« emprunter » des tableaux de la réserve du musée d'Antibes. Ainsi, Le gobeur d'oursin, peint en 1946, recouvre le portrait du Général Vanderberg (d'auteur non connu), héros de la guerre de 1914, généreux donateur du musée [6].…”

“…Non-destructive analysis by traditional macroscopic methods (X-radiography, near-infrared reflectance imaging, UV-visible fluorescence photography) can give the information on the support of the painting, compositional paint changes, under drawings, paint and varnish applications and restorations [3]. On the microscopic scale, materials can be identified by using Raman spectroscopy [4]; in macroscopic scale by using reflectance imaging spectroscopy [5], and X-ray fluorescence intensity mapping [6]. The methods offering 3D information are under investigation [7][8][9].…”
