Visualization of 40 Years of Tropical Cyclone Positions and Their Rainfall Impacts in Central America

Abstract: This article focuses on a visualization of tropical cyclone track data occurring over a 40year period (1970-2010) and their relationship with (extremely) heavy rainfall reported by 88 Central American weather stations. The purpose of the visualization is to associate the paths of tropical cyclones in oceanic areas with heavy rainfall inland. Thus, the potential for producing a set of rainfall patterns might somehow help in predicting where different impacts like flooding might occur when tropical cyclones deve… Show more

“…En estudios referentes a la visualización de datos de huracanes, el uso de macrodatos geoespaciales permite generar avances en la investigación, al predecir y visualizar el riesgo potencial o vulnerabilidad a los peligros naturales [9]; como el análisis del CURDS [1], el cual muestra una visualización de la trayectoria de los huracanes y tormentas tropicales que llegaron a la costa este de Estados Unidos entre 1950 y 2018. Abarca las variables de los huracanes como nombre, fecha, presión e intensidad.…”

“…In this case, indirect impacts are associated with the relative position of the TC in relation to the place in which the impacts are reported, more so than other factors such as hurricane intensity. Even though direct effects are dominant through the bibliography of TCs, indirect effects Article Title can have similar impacts in Central America, and most importantly, their frequency of occurrence is higher, especially in the southern part of the isthmusPérez-Briceño et al (2016).The relationship between extreme precipitations and TCs location in Central America has already been studied recently byHidalgo et al (2020) andHernández-Castro et al (2021), covering different territories along the region due to TCs located on the ETP and the CS Alvarado and Alfaro (2003). suggested a gross estimate of rain due to TCs for Costa Rica of approximately 98 mm year −1 , with a range, given by the standard deviations curves between 64 to 131 mm year −1 Waylen and Harrison (2005).…”
