Graphical approaches used in a long-term investigation into using human-centred methods in geovisualization design include, from left: keyword in context; card sorting; requirements and design concept sketching; and wireframe, paper and digital prototypes.Abstract-Working with three domain specialists we investigate human-centered approaches to geovisualization following an ISO13407 taxonomy covering context of use, requirements and early stages of design. Our case study, undertaken over three years, draws attention to repeating trends: that generic approaches fail to elicit adequate requirements for geovis application design; that the use of real data is key to understanding needs and possibilities; that trust and knowledge must be built and developed with collaborators. These processes take time but modified human-centred approaches can be effective. A scenario developed through contextual inquiry but supplemented with domain data and graphics is useful to geovis designers. Wireframe, paper and digital prototypes enable successful communication between specialist and geovis domains when incorporating real and interesting data, prompting exploratory behaviour and eliciting previously unconsidered requirements. Paper prototypes are particularly successful at eliciting suggestions, especially for novel visualization. Enabling specialists to explore their data freely with a digital prototype is as effective as using a structured task protocol and is easier to administer. Autoethnography has potential for framing the design process. We conclude that a common understanding of context of use, domain data and visualization possibilities are essential to successful geovis design and develop as this progresses. HC approaches can make a significant contribution here. However, modified approaches, applied with flexibility, are most promising. We advise early, collaborative engagement with data -through simple, transient visual artefacts supported by data sketches and existing designs -before moving to successively more sophisticated data wireframes and data prototypes.

The paper presents an approach that combines conceptual and evolutionary techniques to support change impact analysis in source code. Conceptual couplings capture the extent to which domain concepts and software artifacts are related to each other. This information is derived using Information Retrieval based analysis of textual software artifacts that are found in a single version of software (e.g., comments and identifiers in a single snapshot of source code). Evolutionary couplings capture the extent to which software artifacts were co-changed. This information is derived from analyzing patterns, relationships, and relevant information of source code changes mined from multiple versions in software repositories. The premise is that such combined methods provide improvements to the accuracy of impact sets compared to the two individual approaches.A rigorous empirical assessment on the changes of the open source systems Apache httpd, ArgoUML, iBatis, KOffice, and jEdit is also reported. The impact sets are evaluated at the file and method levels of granularity for all the software systems considered in the empirical evaluation.The results show that a combination of conceptual and evolutionary techniques, across several cutoff points and periods of history, provides statistically significant improvements in accuracy over either of the two techniques used independently. Improvements in F-measure values of up to 14%(from 3% to 17%) over the conceptual technique in ArgoUML at the method granularity, and up to 21% over the evolutionary technique in iBatis (from 9% to 30%) at the file granularity were reported.

Multivariate data sets exist in a wide variety of fields and parallel coordinates visualizations are commonly used for analysing such data. This paper presents a usability evaluation where we compare three types of parallel coordinates visualization for exploratory analysis of multivariate data. We use a standard parallel coordinates display with manual permutation of axes, a standard parallel coordinates display with automatic permutation of axes, and a multi-relational 3D parallel coordinates display with manual permutation of axes. We investigate whether a 3D layout showing more relations simultaneously, but distorted by perspective effects, is advantageous when compared with a standard 2D layout. The evaluation is accomplished by means of an experiment comparing performance differences for a class of task known to be well-supported by parallel coordinates. Two levels of difficulty of the task are used and both require the user to find relationships between variables in a multivariate data set. Our results show that for the manual exploration of a complex interrelated multivariate data set, the user performance with multi-relational 3D parallel coordinates is significantly faster. In simpler tasks, however, the difference is negligible. The study adds to the body of work examining the utility of 3D representations and what properties of structure in 3D space can be successfully used in 3D representations of multivariate data.
