Visual Quality Assessment of Stereoscopic Image and Video: Challenges, Advances, and Future Trends

Abstract: Along with other digital visual media [8,10], the amount of stereoscopic/3D content delivered by the cinema, television, and entertainment industries for human consumption has been growing dramatically over the past few years. According to the latest theatrical market statistics gathered by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) [73], the proportion of cinema screens that are 3D has reached 35 % worldwide, and approximately half of all cinema-goers viewed at least one 3D cinema in 2012. As Hollywood … Show more

“…Several research studies investigated the 3D display to indicate whether a 3D display was better than a 2D display [61][62][63]. A 3D display offers a new virtual system with factors that should attract increased attention [64,65]. For this study, a 3D product has the same meaning when applied to 3D handicraft products.…”

“…The perceptual quality measurement of 3D images that have been distorted is the topic of this study, which can be quite different from the perceptual quality measurement of 3D content. Further, 3D distortion measurement can be divided into two categories: subjective measurement and objective measurement [9]. Subjective measurement can provide accurate results but has many limitations, e.g., time-consuming, complex, tedious, and unsuitable for real-time systems [10].…”

“…Thusly, it is necessary to design objective 3DIQM methods to automatically and robustly measure and analysis the quality of 3D image. Based on the availability of a reference stereopair, objective 3DIQM methods can be divided into three categories: full reference (FR), reducedreference [RR] and no/blind reference (NR/blind) methods [4,5].…”
