Visual performance after the implantation of a new trifocal intraocular lens

Abstract: PurposeTo evaluate the subjective and objective visual results after the implantation of a new trifocal diffractive intraocular lens.MethodsA new trifocal diffractive intraocular lens was designed combining two superimposed diffractive profiles: one with +1.75 diopters (D) addition for intermediate vision and the other with +3.50 D addition for near vision. Fifty eyes of 25 patients that were operated on by one surgeon are included in this study. The uncorrected and best distance-corrected monocular and binocu… Show more

“…With the FineVision trifocal IOL, Alió et al [17] reported a mean monocular UNVA of 0.26 ± 0.15 (decimal 0.55; measured at 40 cm) and Jonker et al [25] 0.15 ± 0.13 logMAR (decimal 0.71). Mean logMAR UNVA values of 0.11 ± 0.12 (decimal 0.11; measured at 35 cm) and 0.01 ± 0.06 (decimal 0.98; measured at 35 cm) have been reported by Vryghem and Heireman [19] and Cochener et al [13].…”

“…Independent of the pupil size, the diffractive structure of this trifocal IOL was designed to limit the amount of energy allocated to intermediate vision compared with the allocation for far and near vision. The design of this IOL was described in detail by Gatinel et al 18 Several clinical studies [19][20][21] found the IOL improved intermediate visual acuity while maintaining good distance and …”

“…In order to contrast the performance of the LSL with other presbyopia correction approaches, the through-focus VA curves for the naked presbyopic eye (monocular), the LSL-corrected eye (monocular), correction with diffractive trifocal IOL FineVision (binocular) (PhysIOL, Liège, Belgium), 7 traditional monovision 31 (binocular simulator), combined monovision with a small aperture inlay 31 (binocular simulator), correction with diffractive trifocal IOL AT Lisa tri 839MP 8 (binocular) (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Oberkochen, Germany), and center-distance Proclear multifocal contact lens 32 (monocular) (Coopervision, Pleasanton, CA, USA) are presented (Fig. 8).…”

“…Multifocal intraocular lenses usually are bifocal or trifocal. 7,8 Recent proposals include modifying the topography of the cornea with refractive surgery 4 or inserting a small-aperture (pinhole) implant to artificially reduce the size of the pupil and generate a wider depth of focus. …”
