Visual intervention in early onset visual impairment: A review

Abstract: Vision is a primary and motivating sense. Early visual experience derived from the external world is known to have an important impact on the development of central visual pathways, and not surprisingly, visual impairment constitutes a risk factor for overall development. In light of the role of vision in early brain development, infants and young children with visual impairment should be thus entitled to early and effective visual intervention programmes. In this review, we discuss early visual interventions … Show more

“…The literature reports few other early intervention programs for infants with visual impairment [3,13,28,50], which are quite similar to ours for characteristics such as the child and family-centred care approach, with a focus on child's strengths and needs and a multisensorial, multidimensional and interdisciplinary approach; all of these, except one [3], evaluated their efficacy with other parameters and did not focus on parents' satisfaction.…”

“…Despite the great number of articles on early intervention in literature, there are still relatively few recent contributions regarding early intervention programs in infants with visual impairment, as reported in recent reviews, aimed at evaluating their effectiveness [28,29]. The parents' satisfaction on the quality of the care received in early intervention is even less studied [3,26,30,31]; although different settings and populations were studied, the quality of the family's support played an important role in all studies.…”

“…Visual impairment is the most vulnerable type of disability. It encompasses a variety of visual challenges ranging from low vision to total blindness (Micheletti, Merabet, Galli, & Fazzi, 2023). When SWVI is included in regular educational settings, they may pose challenges for the teachers as their needs are different from the rest of the class and the general education teachers usually have inadequate knowledge and skills to compensate for their needs.…”

“…Research on the navigation capabilities of humans pursues a better understanding of the neural architecture involved in these processes in the remarkable effort to find answers and possible solutions to impairments, lesions and disease. Important for clinical consequences is the review of Micheletti et al (2022) that underlines the need for highquality, carefully designed and adequately reported studies to improve the clinical efficacy of approaches to treating infants with visual impairment. Physiological and pathological vision processes are also the topic of the article by Tafuro et al (2023), on the spectral dynamics of visual awareness.…”
