Background: The objective of this study is to assess the prevalence of visual impairment and visual care practices and its association with socioeconomic conditions in the infant population in Catalonia. Methods: The Catalan Institute of Statistics provided a random sample of 0 to 14-year-old non-institutionalized children whose parents were interviewed in a continuous health survey from 2011 to 2015 in Catalonia. A multistage stratified and random sampling procedure considering age, sex, county and town was followed. All results have been weighted according to the sample design and are presented as the proportion of the condition with its 95% confidence limits. Chi-square tests were performed to evaluate the association between categorical variables. To study the association of visual care with independent variables, a multiple logistic regression model was used. Results: In 0 to 14-year-old children, a 12.9% (95% confidence interval [CI] [11.8-13.9]) prevalence of correctable visual impairment was observed. The prevalence of non-correctable visual impairment was 0.9% (95% CI [0.6-1.2]). Noncorrectable visual impairment was more prevalent in families with lower education levels, manual professions or unemployed. Of children without visual impairment, 13,5% (95% CI:12.3-14.6) visited a visual care professional in the last 12 months while this proportion was 67.4% (95% CI [63.3-71.5]) among those with correctable visual impairment. When parents have a university degree or non-manual professions, a higher level of visual care was observed. In children with correctable visual impairment, visual reviews were more frequent when parents are employed in a non-manual profession. Conclusions: For the first time, indicators related to visual impairment in children in Catalonia have been recorded. There is an association between lower socioeconomic status and having non-correctable visual impairment, and conversely, having correctable visual impairment was significantly associated with employed parents. More visual care is associated with higher socioeconomic status.

Enfermedades del trabajador en una empresa peruana en aplicación de la ley de seguridad y salud en el trabajo 1, a,b,c 2c 2c 3c RESUMENObjetivo: Identificar las enfermedades más frecuentes, según área laboral. Material y Métodos: La investigación fue de tipo descriptivo, prospectivo, exploratorio y de corte transversal. Se realizó en una fábrica de Lima, que estaba en proceso de aplicación a la Ley . Según los criterios de Seguridad y Salud en el Trabajo de selección, ingresaron 121 trabajadores los cuales participaron del examen médico y se aplicó una ficha para datos médicos ocupacionales. Se realizó el análisis estadístico descriptivo (media, desviación estándar, frecuencias y respectivos IC 95%), se consideró un nivel de significancia (p<0,05). Se empleó el paquete estadístico SPSS y Microsoft Excel. Resultados: La población de estudio se agrupó en dos: obreros y administrativos. La edad media de la población fue 37,48 años y el sexo masculino representó el 83,5%. Las características patológicas más frecuentes fueron: Dislipidemia (Hipertrigliceridemia 66,9%, Hipercolesterolemia 64,5%), ametropía no corregida 37,2% e hipoacusia Leve 36,8% y sobrepeso 57%. Según el área laboral: el personal obrero, presentó mayor frecuencia de problemas auditivos, dislipidemia, sobrepeso e hipertensión arterial (HTA). El personal administrativo tuvo mayor afectación de dislipidemia, ametropía no corregida, obesidad grado I y sobrepeso. Conclusiones: Las enfermedades más frecuentes en las dos áreas ocupacionales según el grupo I: ametropía e hipoacusia; en el grupo II: la dislipidemia y el sobrepeso.Palabras clave: Enfermedades del trabajador, ametropía, hipoacusia y dislipidemia. Latin American immigrants make up 49% of the total immigrant population in Spain, yet little is known about their eye health. The aim of this study is to determine if there are differences in self-perceived eye health, access to eye care specialists, and use of lenses between a sample of Latin American immigrant workers from Colombia and Ecuador, and native-born workers in Spain. We used data from the PELFI cohort (Project for Longitudinal Studies of Immigrant Families). The sample consisted of 179 immigrant workers born in Colombia or Ecuador, and 83 Spanish-born workers. The outcome variables were self-perceived eye health, access to eye specialists, and use of lenses. A descriptive analysis of the sample was carried out, and the prevalence of the three outcome variables in immigrants and natives was calculated and adjusted for explanatory variables. Random effects logistic regression models examined eye health outcomes by workers’ country of birth. Immigrants are less likely to report poor self-perceived eye health than native-born (ORc 0.46; CI 95%, 0.22–0.96). Furthermore, they have less access to specialists (ORc 2.61; CI 95%, 1.32–5.15) and a higher probability of needing lenses but not having them (ORc 14.14; CI 95%, 1.77–112.69). This latter variable remained statistically significant after adjusting for covariates (ORa 34.05; CI 95%, 1.59–729.04). Latin American immigrants may not value the use of lenses, despite eye care specialists indicating that they need them. Eye health education is required to recognize the importance of using lenses according to their visual needs.

Abstract: The use of visual correction is more prevalent among women than among men, especially in older individuals. The use of optical correction is more common among more advantaged social groups and is associated with particular occupations.
