Visual Acuity in Simple Myopic Astigmatism: Influence of Cylinder Axis

Abstract: The strength of the vector representing the astigmatic refractive state describes very accurately the performance of visual acuity across simple myopic astigmatic errors. In these cases, visual acuity can be associated with a single refractive parameter. This fact could be useful, especially in statistical studies involving visual performance.

“…The result of correlation coefficient, 0.991 (p<0.01), indicates that the calculated values have homogeneity with measured values. From the calculated values, we derived the relationship between uncorrected astigmatism and spherical equivalent VA upon the consideration of cylindrical lens unit, 0.25 D. The important point of this study is to derive a mathematical equation from a model test which has not been used in previous studies [10][11][12][13]. The data calculated from the equation is highly reliable when compared with clinical data.…”

“…Despite this, other studies have proved this assumption as reasonable. 43 Using common clinician limits, Zernike terms considered not clinically relevant (DEq , 0.25 D) will be marked in green, Zernike terms that might be considered clinically relevant (0.25 D , DEq , 0.50 D) will be marked in yellow, and Zernike terms considered clinically relevant (DEq . 0.50 D) will be marked in red.…”

“…The lens rotates until a fibronectin and collagen adhesion develops between the IOL and the posterior capsule, which prevents any further rotary motion. 12 The amount of cylindrical correction reduction due to postoperative rotation was not large enough 13 to affect the expected end result in final uncorrected distance VA.…”
