Visible-light photon migration through myocardium in vivo

Abstract: Empirical data between 510 and 590 nm of diffuse reflected light from the pig heart in vivo have shown that myoglobin and cytochrome c absorption peaks with little apparent contribution of red blood cell (RBC) Hb. Monte Carlo simulations of photon migration in tissue were performed to compare the effects of myoglobin and cytochromes with those of blood Hb on photon pathlengths and diffuse reflectance of visible wavelengths (450–600 nm) from the pig heart in vivo. Wavelength dependence of the input parameters, … Show more

“…Oxygenated blood and muscle are red because they contain Fe þ2 . Oxygenated blood circulates throughout tissues giving all organs a pink-red hue, [14][15][16][17] more strikingly observed in the skin, mucosae, retina, the fresh gray matter of the brain, the red nucleus of the midbrain, the spleen, and the placenta. In contrast, deoxygenated blood is purple-blue because of its high carbamino-Hb content (CO 2 bound to Hb, purple-blue color) (Figure 2, D through K).…”

“…6,7 We have recently described increased capillary blood flow at the point of pain in patients with insertional and midportion tendinopathy of the Achilles tendon compared to healthy subjects. 13 Blood flow and blood flow velocity are measured in arbitrary units (AU).…”

“…Information was gathered primarily from small arteries, capillaries, and venules as light that entered vessels > 100 μm was completely absorbed. 18 Most (85%) hemoglobin was in the capillary venous compartment of the microcirculation, and measurements with this spectrometer primarily reflected the capillary venous oxygen saturation and capillary venous rHb. The fiber probe was gently placed on the liver surface for 60 seconds and values were recorded every 2 seconds.…”
