Visean corals of the Kiyasar area, South of Sari, Northern Iran

Abstract: -Corals from the middle part of the Mobarak Formation, exposed in the Kiyasar area of northern Iran, were examined for descriptions, age determination and indications of the paleoenvironment. New genera for the families Adamanophyllidae and Clisiophyllidae/ Amygdalophyllinae were established and three new species were described for the Bifossularia, Clisiophyllum and Spirophyllum genera. The age of studied corals is generally consistent with the early-middle Visean as previously was determined based on foramin… Show more

“…Distribution: T. megastoma is an index fossil from the late Tournaisian and early Visean. It is common in the British Isles (Vaughan 1905;Matley and Vaughan 1906;Mitchell 1973;Somerville et al 1986), Iran (Ogar et al 2013), Kuznets Basin and Altai (Dobrolyubova et al 1966), and Himalaya (Wang et al 2003) and less common in the same ages in Belgium (Tourneur et al 1989).…”

“…In the western Danghan area, fossiliferous successions of the Mobarak Formation containing well‐preserved foraminifers, corals and brachiopods have been reported (Falahatgar and Mosaddegh, ). Biostratigraphical studies of the foraminifers (Falahatgar and Mosaddegh, ; Falahatgar et al ., ) and corals (Ogar et al ., ) indicate that the Mobarak Formation in the Kiyasar section ranges from the lower Tournaisian to early‐middle Viséan. In the present paper, we describe a brachiopod fauna collected by Falahatgar from the upper part of the Kiyasar section (Fig.…”

“…Thus, only the Polish species described by Fedorowski (1970) are considered. Species of that genus introduced since then (e.g., Rodríguez 1984;Wu and Zhao 1989;Berkowski 2002;Chwieduk 2005;Ogar et al 2013) are either not discussed or only briefly commented.…”
