Viscum album Induces Apoptosis by Regulating STAT3 Signaling Pathway in Breast Cancer Cells

Abstract: In this study, we investigated the potential anticancer effects of Viscum album, a parasitic plant that grows on Malus domestica (VaM) on breast cancer cells, and explored the underlying mechanisms. VaM significantly inhibited cell viability and proliferation and induced apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner. VaM also regulated cell cycle progression and effectively inhibited activation of the STAT3 signaling pathway through SHP-1. Combining VaM with low-dose doxorubicin produced a synergistic effect, highlight… Show more

“…The new compounds 2f,g and 3c increased the cellular apoptosis in both LoVo and MCF-7 cells in a similar manner, with a higher impact after 48 h of incubation compared with the 24 h experiments, but with little differences between the 5 µM and 50 µM doses. The effect on apoptosis is consistent with the predicted mechanisms of action [40,41]. The diminished impact of the compounds on LoVo cells in contrast to their effects on MCF-7 cells can be explained by the intrinsic resistance of the LoVo cells stemming from inactivating mutations in BAX, a pro-apoptotic member of the Bcl-2 protein family [42].…”

“…It has been reported that the inhibition of STAT3 activity could induce apoptosis and autophagy [ 14 , 15 , 16 ]. Apoptosis plays a key role in achieving cellular homeostasis and is characterized by chromatin condensation, cell shrinkage, and DNA fragmentation [ 17 ].…”
