Viscous Dampers Installation Arrangement and Hysteresis Curve Characteristics Research on the Mega-Sub Controlled Structure System

Abstract: This paper focuses on viscous dampers disposition schemes regarding the vibration control of the Mega-Sub Controlled Structure System (MSCSS) subjected to rare earthquake excitation. It is intended in this study to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of the MSCSS compared with the traditional mega frame structure. The optimum arranging scheme matched with dynamic characteristics of MSCSS is given by analyzing the dynamic responses of the structure with different arrangements of viscous dampers on structure. “…Furthermore, friction dampers were applied in a MSCSS substructure to improve the substructure's responses under wind and seismic excitations. [ 7,8 ] The most recent controlling mechanism investigated for the MSCSS involved optimizing the locations and parameters of viscous dampers. Additionally, rubber bearings were introduced at the tops of additional columns between the mega‐beams within the floor and the substructural components to reduce the substructure's response to seismic activity.…”

“…The results showed that the MSCSS has a better structurally controlled response under seismic activity; i.e., it experiences less structural accelerations and displacements than previous models. A further application of friction dampers was made in an MSCSS substructure to improve the substructure's responses to wind and seismic excitations [14,15]. Recent research on an MSCSS viscous damper control mechanism involved optimizing damper locations and parameters.…”

“…Taking this problem into account, many researchers have explored different ways to reduce the displacement of the sub structure. Li et al 4 introduced the viscous damper (VD) into the MSSS, studied the influence of the additional damping on the control performance of the MSSS, and concluded that appropriate VD will greatly mitigate the response of the sub structure as well as the mega frame. In addition, the friction damper and magnetorheological damper were also applied in the MSSS 5,6 .…”
