Visages of geodiversity and geoheritage: a multidisciplinary approach to valuing, conserving and managing abiotic nature

Abstract: Geodiversity and geoheritage studies are multidisciplinary, drawing from all sides of geosciences and extending them into the humanities, geoarchaeology, spatial planning, territorial and risk management, economics, tourism, or culture using integrated and interdisciplinary research approaches. During the last three decades, geodiversity and geoheritage research experienced a considerable growth that confirm both scientific and public relevance of these topics. In this introductory text, a brief review of curr… Show more

“…Twelve geosites were previously inventoried in the Costa Branca [26][27][28]. With the main aim of assessing the geoheritage risk of degradation related to climate change, a quantitative approach was performed by applying a method based on well-established concepts: fragility, vulnerability, and public use Table 1; [11,12].…”

“…Geoheritage is the part of geodiversity that presents high scientific value and whose conservation is desirable for present and future generations. Kubalíková et al [12] highlight the importance of geoheritage for sustainable development and resilience to geological hazards at a global level.…”

“…Despite the numerous achievements in the international research of geoheritage, geoconservation, geodiversity, geoparks, and geotourism made during the three past decades [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8], the inventory of geosites still remains on the agenda [9][10][11]. Finding new heritage objects of this kind is especially urgent for large and geologically rich territories, the geoheritage of which has not been explored extensively.…”

“…As emphasized in the research by [3], geodiversity and geoheritage encompass intrinsic as well as societal values. The authors of [4] outlined that for the effective and sustainable management of geodiversity and geoheritage, it is crucial to consider the broader surroundings of these sites and implement geoconservation (conservation strategies aimed at the fragility of geosites and of landscape-dominating geological features) measures for the wider area.…”

“…The intricate interplay between geodiversity and the occurrence of geohazards requires a nuanced understanding that draws from a diverse body of literature. Therefore, the influences of geohazard susceptibility on the geodiversity have been studied across the world (e.g., [3,[5][6][7]).…”
