“…Barley yellow mosaic disease is one of the most important diseases of winter barley in north‐western Europe and East Asia (Plumb, 2002). It is caused by Barley mild mosaic virus (BaMMV) and Barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV), both transmitted by Polymyxa graminis Ledingham (Toyama and Kusaba, 1970), and belonging to the genus Bymovirus within the family Potyviridae (Adams et al., 2005).…”

“…The viruliferous aphid vectors colonizing newly seeded areas introduce the disease into the field (primary inoculations) and, once the first hosts are infectious, subsequent aphids feeding on infected hosts spread the virus (secondary inoculations) within the field. Rhopalosiphum padi is generally blamed for most of the autumnal infections before sexual morphs migrate to their primary host Prunus padus , while S. avenae feeds almost exclusively on grasses and cereals and is the main driver of their infection in the spring . During mild winters, both species can survive and spread viruses.…”

“…Barley mild mosaic virus (BaMMV) and Barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) are the causal agents of the economically important soilborne barley mosaic disease of winter barley in North‐western Europe and East Asia (Huth & Adams, 1990; Plumb, 2002). Both viruses are members of the genus Bymovirus (family Potyviridae ) transmitted by the plasmodiophorid soilborne vector Polymyxa graminis .…”
