Viruses in pulp and periapical inflammation: a review

Abstract: The presence of viruses in endodontic disease has been studied in the last decade. Their presence is associated with periapical radiolucency and with clinical findings, such as pain. The aim of this review is to analyze the scientific evidence currently published about viruses in pulp and periapical inflammation, and its possible clinical implications. A literature review was carried out using the Medline/Pubmed database. The search was performed, in English and Spanish, using the following keyword combination… Show more

“…Furthermore, systemic conditions i.e. poor glycemic control [ 6 ], diabetes [ 7 ] viral diseases [ 8 ] and lowered bone mineral density [ 9 ] seem to predispose to the occurrence of AP. Different epidemiological cross-sectional studies show AP being a widespread condition in many countries, and its prevalence is positively correlated with age (Additional file 1 : Table S1), gender and socioeconomic status of the region.…”

“…Bacterial penetration has been reported as an important risk factor of pulp inflammation, necrosis and periapical pathosis [21]. LPS, the main component of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, plays a key role in bacteria-induced dental pulp inflammation and pulpitis [22].…”

“…Of note, it was reported that periodontal therapy led to decrease in the amount of detectable EBV as well as HSV-1 and CMV in chronic periodontitis patients ( p < 0.05) compared to baseline ( 95 ). Regarding endodontic lesions, a recent review by Hernández-Vigueras and colleagues reported that EBV was identified in a significant number of endodontic diseases ( 96 ). In total, EBV was detected in 41% of clinical samples compared to only 2% for controls.…”
