Viruses and Type 1 Diabetes: From Enteroviruses to the Virome

Abstract: For over a century, viruses have left a long trail of evidence implicating them as frequent suspects in the development of type 1 diabetes. Through vigorous interrogation of viral infections in individuals with islet autoimmunity and type 1 diabetes using serological and molecular virus detection methods, and mechanistic studies of virus infected human pancreatic β-cells, the prime suspects have been narrowed down to predominantly human enteroviruses. Here we provide a comprehensive overview of eviden… Show more

“…There exists a relationship between enteroviral infection and T1D development as suggested in two meta‐analyses of 24 and 38 case–control studies 10,11 . Furthermore, several experimental data strongly support the involvement of CVB in the pathogenesis of this disease 12–14 …”

“…The Coxsackie B4 virus may also activate T lymphocytes, causing direct damage to β-cells. A viral infection may also cause T cells to produce pro-inflammatory cytokines, increasing the body's inflammatory cell activation and infiltration (19) . An extra advantage is an autoimmune response against beta cells caused by structural similarities between viral protein epitopes and cellular antigens.…”

“…Les Entérovirus en sont un autre exemple avec des preuves moléculaires qui s'accumulent concernant leur participation à la survenue d'une auto-immunité ciblant les îlots de Langerhans du pancréas, à l'origine d'un diabète de type 1. Cependant, les génotypes viraux précis responsables n'ont pas encore été identifiés [65].…”
