Virus inactivation in stored human urine, sludge and animal manure under typical conditions of storage or mesophilic anaerobic digestion

Abstract: Viruses represent major disease transmitting agents carried by human excreta and animal manure. Understanding virus inactivation is therefore essential in preventing microbial spread due to inadequate treatment of these materials. Here, we investigated the inactivation kinetics of the single-stranded (ss) RNA phage MS2, DNA phages T4 and ΦX174, and the double-stranded DNA human adenovirus in stored human urine, sludge, and animal manure, at temperatures and pH values typical of storage under naturally occurrin… Show more

“…Viruses seemed closely associated with Enterococci, and they were more resistant than coliforms during AD, but less resistant than spore formers, such as Clostridia (Avery et al, 2014;Sahlström, 2003). On the other hand, DNA viruses were found to be more persistent than the sing-stranded RNA phage (Decrey and Kohn, 2017).…”

“…For a practical AD system, environmental factors are often correlated and have intertwined effect on the outcome (Decrey and Kohn, 2017;Kumar et al, 1999). For example, temperature can act directly or indirectly on pathogens by enhancing the toxicity of ammonia and VFAs.…”
