Virulence markers associated with Trueperella pyogenes infections in livestock and companion animals

Abstract: The role of particular virulence factors of Trueperella pyogenes that determine different pyogenic infections among domestic animals is poorly understood. Eight putative virulence genes and genotype profiles of 71 isolates were investigated among different clinical manifestations in domestic animals. The most common genes were plo (71/71 = 100·0%), fimA (70/71 = 98·6%), nanP (56/71 = 78·9%), fimE (53/71 = 74·6%), fimC (46/71 = 64·8%) and nanH (45/71 = 63·4%), whereas plo/fimA/fimE/fimC/nanH/nanP (17/71 = 23·9%… Show more

“…3,6,16 Interestingly, the lack of cbpA among caprine and ovine isolates in our study is consistent with findings of prior studies in which all tested isolates from goats and sheep tested negative for cbpA. 6,12,14 In addition to CbpA, T. pyogenes isolates can express neuraminidases H (NanH) and P (NanP), molecules that are also involved in bacterial adhesion. 8 The occurrence of genes encoding NanH and NanP have been shown to vary 40% and 64%, respectively, to 100% in bovine T. pyogenes isolates.…”

“…Studies involving virulence factors are important for investigation of molecular epidemiology and pathogenicity of various pathogens. 12 Our study contributes to the understanding of phenotypic and genotypic diversity that exist among T. pyogenes isolates recovered from large and small ruminants and, overall, reinforces the importance of characterization of more clinical isolates in order to better understand the pathogenesis of this bacterium in different animal species.…”

“…In Brazil, in the state of Minas Gerais, isolation and identification were carried out of M. haemolytica bacteria as a causative agent of pneumonia in ovines 80 . Species of the genus Trueperella are known to be important opportunistic pathogens in livestock and domestic animals, causing a variety of infections 81,82 , as well as mastitis and uterine infections in cows 83,84 . Mastitis caused by T. pyogenes is considered of minor importance in goats 22,85 .…”

“…Due to its pyogenic, opportunistic characteristic (taking advantage of a gateway), T. pyogenes causes suppurative infection in domestic and wild animals (RISSETI et al, 2017;ÇEÇEN et al, 2018;ROGOVSKYY et al, 2018), although virulence factors have not been fully elucidated (RISSETI et al, 2017;LIU et al, 2018;TAMAI et al, 2018). The evolution of the disease is related to cases of mastitis, arthritis, interdigital phlebitis, osteomyelitis, abortion, metritis, orchitis, omphalitis and bronchopneumonia as well as subcutaneous abscess or abscess in parenchymal tissues, with a variable prognosis (CAFFARO et al, 2014;ISHIYAMA et al, 2017;WARETH et al, 2018;KONTTURI et al, 2019;PIERSANTI et al, 2019).…”
