Virulence factors of Candida species from the oral mucosa and prostheses of elderly people from a riverside community in the Amazon state, Brazil

Abstract: Introduction Candida albicans is the yeast most commonly affecting the oral cavity, sometimes causing infection. However, several factors may be associated with the onset of candidiasis, which may be related not only to the hygiene and health of individuals, but also to the pathogenicity of these microorganisms. Objective To evaluate the virulence factors of Candida yeasts isolated from the oral mucosa of elderly people living in the “Comunidade Lago do Limão”, municipality of Iranduba, Amazonas state, Brazil… Show more

“…Phospholipase breaks down phospholipids in the cell membrane of the epithelial cells, leading to cell membrane damage and lysis. Proteinase damages the surface host proteins and degrades the locally protective immunoglobulin A (IgA) and complement components 3 (C3) by hydrolysis of peptide bonds [ 28 , 29 ]. In this regard, the biofilm formation and two hydrolytic enzymes, including phospholipase and proteinase, were detected in C. krusei isolates.…”

“…A ozonioterapia é utilizada na desinfecção da cavidade dentária onde há contaminação de bactérias cariogênicas em cavidades profundas pela aplicação do O3 e posterior à remoção dos tecidos infectados (Silva et al, 2019). Além disso, quando aplicado por 40 segundos em cáries radiculares não cavitadas, ele tem capacidade de reverter e interromper a progressão da lesão (Rapone et al, 2021).…”

“…. Candida species members have the ability to cause infection due to bosses a wide range of virulence factors, such as the expression of adhesions and invasions on the cell surface, the morphological transition between yeast and hyphal forms, thigmotropism, biofilms formation, and the secretion of hydrolytic enzymes [3].…”
