Virulence and resistance profile of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from food

Abstract: Staphylococcus aureus is considered a global community and health care pathogen responsible for staphylococcal food poisoning. The aim of this study was to characterize several isolates of S. aureus recovered from different food products concerning enterotoxin genes and other virulence factors including antimicrobial resistance. In 2009, a total of 78 coagulase-positive staphylococci from 1454 food samples were identifi ed to species level; 73 were confi rmed as S. aureus. Of the S. aureus isolates 5.5% were r… Show more

“…These five foodborne pathogenic bacteria are the main pathogenic bacteria found in aquatic products, meat products, milk, and other foods. The ingestion of the contaminated food results in severe diarrhea and dehydration, and even causes major risks such as meningitis, febrile gastroenteritis, and systemic infections in humans [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ]. Therefore, early identification, monitoring and warning of foodborne pathogens are essential to prevent the occurrence of foodborne diseases.…”

“…This phenomenon implies a diminishing existence of effective antimicrobial agents to treat infections caused by these bacteria (Magiorakos et al, 2012;Lin et al, 2017). Among antibiotic-resistant bacteria, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is spreading worldwide in both hospital (HA-MRSA) and community (CA-MRSA) settings, including livestock animals (LA-MRSA) (Castro et al, 2017;Lakhundi & Zhang, 2018;Lozano et al, 2020;Togneri et al, 2017). Infections caused by MRSA constitute one of three major infectious diseases, threatening human health (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015;Lozano et al, 2020;Togneri et al, 2017).…”
