This paper contextualises before summarising a conceptual framework for virtue ethics in organizations that has been developed by drawing upon the work of the moral philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre. Conducting empirical work with this framework is at an embryonic stage and so, having discussed methodological issues, the paper reports on findings from a longitudinal case study-based research project into the private equity owned organization Alliance Boots. It demonstrates the applicability of the conceptual approach and hence the presence of practices and virtues even within capitalist business organisations. It makes theoretical advances particularly in the relationship between internal and external goods. It proposes a mapping for virtue in organizations and uses this to conduct an organizational analysis of Alliance Boots and its predecessor organizations. The paper thus makes both theoretical and empirical contributions to our knowledge in the area of applied virtue ethics.

Resumo Hoje, o estudo da decisão nas organizações apresenta uma considerável diversidade de abordagens epistemológicas, teórico-conceituais e metodológicas. Todavia, poucas ideias tiveram impacto tão profundo e duradouro no pensamento gerencial sobre as decisões quanto aquelas relacionadas à racionalidade limitada. Apresentada por Herbert Simon no final dos anos 1940, a racionalidade limitada supostamente contesta os pilares fundamentais da racionalidade plena, propondo um caminho mais “realista” para descrever como as escolhas são feitas pelos indivíduos nas organizações. A despeito dos avanços em relação ao modelo da racionalidade plena, será que a racionalidade limitada realmente representa uma mudança de paradigma na interpretação da decisão gerencial? Este ensaio teórico busca demonstrar que a teoria da racionalidade limitada não rompe substancialmente com a teoria da racionalidade plena, uma vez que ainda está longe de abordar os aspectos efetivamente relevantes da decisão gerencial, a saber, seus aspectos morais. O artigo também apresenta e discute elementos conceituais úteis para a edificação de uma teoria moral da racionalidade, a fim de demonstrar como uma verdadeira ruptura com a concepção de racionalidade de Simon pode ser articulada e quais seriam os avanços e as vantagens que tal ruptura traria à investigação dos processos decisórios nas organizações.

Exploring the Diversity of Virtues Through the Lens of Moral Imagination: A Qualitative Inquiry into Organizational Virtues in the Turkish Context

The purpose of this article is to introduce a multidimensional framework based on the concept of moral imagination for analysing and capturing diverse virtues in contemporary Turkish organizations. Based on qualitative interviews with 58 managers in Turkey, this article develops an inventory of Turkish organizational virtues each of which can be associated with a different form of virtuous organizing. The inventory consists of nine forms of moral imagination, which map the multitude of virtues and moral emotions in organizations. Nine emergent forms of moral imagination are based on: integrity, affection, diligence, inspiration, wisdom, trust, gratefulness, justice, and harmony. The findings have made a contribution to the expanding literature on how Islamic organizations develop their business ethics through a repertoire of virtues. An empirical account of the range of virtues in organizational contexts that have emerged as a result of the hybridization of Islamic virtue/aesthetics and neoliberal capitalism in contemporary Turkey is provided. A theoretical contribution is made to business ethics literature through a phenomenology of virtues that provides unique insights on diverse forms of moral imagination in contemporary Turkey where Islam and neoliberal capitalism dynamically co-exist.
