Virtual Sensors for Biodiesel Production in a Batch Reactor

Abstract: Fossil fuel combustion produces around 98% of coal emissions. Therefore, liquid and gaseous biofuels have become more attractive due to their environmental benefits. The biodiesel production process requires measurements that help to control and supervise the variables involved in the process. The measurements provide valuable information about the operation conditions and give estimations about the critical variables of the process. The information from measurements is essential for monitoring the state of a … Show more

“…López-Zapata et al [110] used an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and virtual sensors to measure and estimate operating conditions variables, control performance, and monitor the reaction. Performance analysis used alcohol, triglycerides (TG), methyl ester, diglycerides (DG), glycerol (GL), and monoglycerides (MG) concentrations to evaluate jatropha oil-based biodiesel due to a minor number of measurable variables, like PH and temperature.…”

“…The correlation coefficient and standard deviation of residuals were 0.99992 and 0.00765, respectively, which showed an advantage of MCR-ALS. Lopez-Zapata et al [75] used virtual sensors based on the extended Kalman filter to estimate concentrations of triglycerides, monoglycerides, methyl ester, diglycerides, glycerol and alcohol in jatropha oil-based production of biodiesel. The method had the potentials of real-time implementation because it needed only a few measured variables, such as temperature and pH.…”
