Virtual reality – level of immersion within the crime investigation

Abstract: The 3D reconstruction and visualization of crime scenarios, such as criminal assaults, traffic accidents or homicides are defining a new approach with potential for increasing effectiveness within the criminal investigation process. Modern 3D capturing and processing methods are utilized to create an authentic and immersive virtual environment. Nonetheless, an immersion to virtual environment enables different levels of view. Virtual reality immersion views which are proposed and described. These views are spe… Show more

“…Usually, 3D representations of crime scenes are inspected in ordinary monitors, however, the presentation in a virtual reality environment enhances the experience and permits immersive interactions. VR itself has been shown as an interesting modality able to engage non-experts for crime scene inspections [17,18]. Under these considerations, a line of works utilised VR in their pipelines.…”

“…However, the task of obtaining realistic results from the 3D scanning of a physical environment, particularly one that contains forensic elements such as blood droplets or wall marks, presents a significant challenge (Noghabaei et al 2019). Despite numerous endeavours to reconstruct interior crime scenes, the most formidable obstacle was capturing blind spots within confined spaces, leading to an incomplete representation of the scene (Wang et al 2019;Jani and Johnson 2022;Mach et al 2019). In light of these difficulties, a comprehensive review of techniques was conducted by exploring similar cases in the field of cultural heritage and through consultation with experts.…”

“…One of these technologies is virtual reality technology, which is gradually building its place in the IRS. According to V. Mach [18], virtual reality can be defined as "an advanced user interface that includes a simulation of a real environment in real-time, where the user interacts through several sensory channels (sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste)".…”
