Background: The efficacy of virtual reality for people living with a terminal illness is unclear. Aim: To determine the feasibility and effectiveness of virtual reality use within a palliative care setting. Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis. PROSPERO (CRD42021240395). Data sources: Medline, Embase, AMED, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Web of Science were searched from inception to March 2021. Search terms included ‘virtual reality’ and ‘palliative care’. Eligibility: (1) adult (>18 years old) with a terminal illness (2) at least one virtual reality session and (3) feasibility data and/or at least one patient outcome reported. The ROB-2 and ROBINS tools assessed risk of bias. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) tool assessed the quality of the evidence. Standardised mean differences (Hedges’s g) were calculated from the pre- and post-data. A DerSimonian-Laird random effects model meta-analysis was conducted. Results: Eight studies were included, of which five were in the meta-analysis. All studies had at least some concern for risk of bias. Virtual reality statistically significantly improved pain ( p = 0.0363), tiredness ( p = 0.0030), drowsiness ( p = 0.0051), shortness of breath ( p = 0.0284), depression ( p = 0.0091) and psychological well-being ( p = 0.0201). The quality of the evidence was graded as very low due to small sample sizes, non-randomisation methods and a lack of a comparator arm. Conclusions: Virtual reality in palliative care is feasible and acceptable. However, limited sample sizes and very low-quality studies mean that the efficacy of virtual reality needs further research.

This research aims to display, compare, and analyze the keywords related to parametric design, generative design, and algorithmic design. Digital design has become increasingly inseparable from architects; thus, 3D modeling software has become a necessity for architects. The digital workflow has put computational design—generative design, algorithmic design, and parametric design—into importance. There are emerging trends for the past decade, and a bibliometric analysis can display information about trends in the literature. Literature trends may provide insight into the direction of computational design development. This study uses a bibliometric analysis with VOSviewer and data from Lens to identify the trends from 2011 to 2021. The result indicates several trends: artificial intelligence, computation, machine learning, visualization, and internet technology. The trend analysis needs to be continued in other computational design categories to find continuity in the findings.

A Therapeutic Matrix: Virtual Reality as a Clinical Tool for Spinal Cord Injury-Induced Neuropathic Pain

Neuropathic pain (NP) is a chronic, debilitating, and resistant form of pain. The onset rate of NP following spinal cord injuries (SCI) is high and may reduce the quality of life more than the sensorimotor loss itself. The long-term ineffectiveness of current treatments in managing symptoms and counteracting maladaptive plasticity highlights the need to find alternative therapeutic approaches. Virtual reality (VR) is possibly the best way to administer the specific illusory or reality-like experience and promote behavioral responses that may be effective in mitigating the effects of long-established NP. This approach aims to promote a more systematic adoption of VR-related techniques in pain research and management procedures, highlighting the encouraging preliminary results in SCI. We suggest that the multisensory modulation of the sense of agency and ownership by residual body signals may produce positive responses in cases of brain-body disconnection. First, we focus on the transversal role embodiment and how multisensory and environmental or artificial stimuli modulate illusory sensations of bodily presence and ownership. Then, we present a brief overview of the use of VR in healthcare and pain management. Finally, we discus research experiences which used VR in patients with SCI to treating NP, including the most recent combinations of VR with further stimulation techniques.
