Virtual Pseudonym-Changing and Dynamic Grouping Policy for Privacy Preservation in VANETs

Abstract: Location privacy is a critical problem in the vehicular communication networks. Vehicles broadcast their road status information to other entities in the network through beacon messages to inform other entities in the network. The beacon message content consists of the vehicle ID, speed, direction, position, and other information. An adversary could use vehicle identity and positioning information to determine vehicle driver behavior and identity at different visited location spots. A pseudonym can be used ins… Show more

“…As a result, the adversaries can perform background knowledge attack using static pseudonyms to find the RIDs of the users. Some authors propose pseudonym update mechanisms to overcome this issue [17]. On the other hand, internal attackers can distribute misleading information in the networks without being detected because the networks lack tracking methods.…”

“…The signature of a large group is difficult to manage, while smaller groups affect the privacy protection level [33]. In [38], a dynamic grouping and virtual pseudonym exchange scheme is proposed in which diverse traffic conditions are utilized to update pseudonyms of vehicles for location protection. Some techniques employ dummy data or inaccurate data to generate confusion for an adversary to identify the real location of a vehicle.…”

“…In ref. [25], the concept of dynamic pseudonym has been used instead of vehicle ID to disguise adversary. A dynamic grouping and virtual pseudonym-changing method are proposed in which, based on status, dynamic groups are created with changing pseudonyms.…”
