Virtual Multidisciplinary Tumor Boards: A Narrative Review Focused on Lung Cancer

Abstract: To date, the virtual multidisciplinary tumor boards (vMTBs) are increasingly used to achieve high-quality treatment recommendations across health-care regions, which expands and develops the local MTB team to a regional or national expert network. This review describes the process of lung cancer-specific MTBs and the transition process from face-to-face tumor boards to virtual ones. The review also focuses on the project organization's description, advantages, and disadvantages. Semi-structured interviews iden… Show more

“…As one option with some similarities to AccessHope, Meyer et al 10 describe their experience with an asynchronous patient-initiated second opinion service (Best Doctors) covering all aspects of medicine that included 588 patients with hematology or oncology diagnoses, with opinions in this subset estimated to have moderate or major clinical impact in 38% of cases. Another option that provides a multidisciplinary approach is virtual tumor boards or case conferences, which have been pursued for testicular cancer, 11 sarcoma, 12 and lung cancer, 13 with success in improving care while overcoming geographic barriers.…”

“…Tumor boards represent an ideal platform for data driven peer discussion, both as a means to establish best practice for common cancers, but also as a venue for the multi-disciplinary discussion of complex cases in the context of existing resource limitations ( 9 ). The incorporation of peer partners in virtual MDTs from Western academic centers provides an important avenue for sharing new knowledge as well as identifying areas of need for diagnostic investment in the LMIC ( 31 , 32 ). In addition, such platform provide the opportunity for peer discussion and knowledge transfer that ultimately making the optimal therapeutic choice for the patient.…”

“…On the other hand, the molecular tumor board (MTB), which is composed of experts in various fields such as clinical oncology and genetic medicine, discusses the results of genetic mutation analysis; however, it is a complex, time-consuming, and labor-intensive process [ 21 23 ]. With the growing expectations for precision medicine and the need to make MTBs more efficient and effective, several MTBs have been reported that utilize a virtual environment [ 24 26 ]. The expectation and burden on MTB members are predicted to increase in the future, and the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) and the latest information and communication technology (ICT) to improve the efficiency and automation of MTB is important when establishing a precision medicine system.…”
