Virtual Methods of Testing Automatically Generated Camouflage Patterns Created Using Cellular Automata

Abstract: Abstract. The article presents a method of designing and assessing the camouflage effectiveness of a novel camouflage pattern used in military uniforms. “Artificial intelligence”, namely cellular automata, which, based on terrain imaging, allowed the authors to obtain dedicated, tailor-made, or universal camouflage patterns, was used as the design method. On the other hand, the study on camouflage effectiveness was based on tests with the participation of observers in a virtual environment using a personal com… Show more

“…Paint coatings are fundamentals of camouflagethey camouflage vehicles/objects in the optical range, both in visible light (VIS) and in the near-infrared (NIR) range [31]. The main task of effective camouflage is to eliminate those features, which may cause the object to be differentiated from its surroundings [30], i.e. those that make it possible to distinguish one's own assets from the background, and these may include, for example, colour, shape, size, gloss and texture [37,42].…”

“…Camouflage is a broad concept and can include strategic, operational or direct levels [14,23]. The subject of the article relates to direct camouflage, and in particular camouflage painting (permanent coating systems), which alongside ad hoc measures such as leaves, branches and camouflage…”

“…Rapid prototyping has a wide range of applications and often involves the application of special coatings [20,21], including DLC [22][23][24] or electrospark deposition [25,26], modification of the morphology of the surface layer [27], or welding joints [28]. The presented article introduces a prototype of a flexible cup for a harmonic drive, which due to its significant possible gear ratios and high precision, can find applications in hydraulic control [29][30][31] and the military sector [32][33][34]. Due to the multidimensional dependencies, the implementation of formal statistical techniques [35][36][37], including expert systems support [38] and nonparametric approaches [39][40][41], is necessary.…”
