Virtual laboratories in engineering education: The simulation lab and remote lab

Abstract: Computing and communication technology has had a significant impact on the engineering education system. This technology has improved online and collaborative learning. Besides that, it improves the students learning experiences. One of the distinguishing elements of engineering education is the laboratory requirement. In this paper, we discuss the current trends and key issues in virtual laboratories-simulation environment laboratories and remote laboratories via the Internet. ß

“…The recognised technique in engineering education is the use of laboratory demonstrations to enhance the student's practical knowledge. Laboratories are designed to improve the student ability to investigate and solve engineering problems with appropriate levels of independent thought and creativity; and also to demonstrate suitable levels of reporting technical information [7]. Industry relies on distinctive skills to innovate and compete.…”

“…One of the main techniques in engineering education is the use of laboratories to enhance the students' practical knowledge and skills. Educational laboratories are designed to improve the students' ability to investigate physical phenomena and to solve engineering problems with appropriate levels of independent thought and creativity [6]. Therefore, it is very important for educational institutions to design and implement VR laboratories properly.…”

“…Virtual laboratories are software simulation programs in which learners carry out experiments using a computer . These laboratories have the advantage that variables can be assigned many values; they are also accurate, time-and cost-effective, and experiments can be repeated easily (Balamuralithara and Woods 2009;de Jong et al 2013;Gomes and Bogosyan 2009;Schiffhauer et al 2012, April). The virtual laboratory used in the current study covered the physics topics of buoyancy and Archimedes' principle.…”
