Virtual Impedance-based Decentralized Power Sharing Control of an Islanded AC Microgrid

Abstract: The future of power systems depends on the microgrid (MG) which includes distribution generators utilizing Renewable Energy Resources (RERs) and storage facilities. Decentralized control techniques are more reliable and stable in comparison with centralized controlled techniques. In this paper, a decentralized control strategy is presented for an islanded AC MG system. The control strategy includes improved droop control and virtual impedance. Control strategy with PI controllers to control the voltage and cur… Show more

“…DERs could include renewable units, dispatchable Distributed Generators (DGs), and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) [16][17][18]. Microgrids support the islanding operation capability [19][20][21]. Nevertheless, in some conditions, microgrids can provide ancillary services to other parts of the distribution network by supplying their excess generation back to the utility grid.…”

“…The restoration time for each interruption event, once the outage occurs, is formulated by (18). The reliability indices SAIDI, SAIFI, and CAIDI are computed by (19), (20), and (21), respectively. The auxiliary binary variable  is added to provide value and significance of minimizing the reliability indices in the objective.…”

“…The proposed control strategy includes droop control technique along with virtual impedance. It includes PI controllers to control the voltage and current for two Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) distribution generation units which are connected in parallel combination via a Point of Common Coupling (PCC) [18]. In a microgrid, the concept of Power-Frequency Droop Control (PFDC) is introduced to bring back the grid frequency perfectly and also share the reactive power in an isolated microgrid with the application of virtual power plant (VPP).…”

“…The distributed generations (DGs) are current-controlled sources with frequency and phase angle regulation provided by proportional resonant regulators, and voltage control is provided by a predictive voltage controller in each DG. References [33][34][35] look into transient oscillations that occur during mode transitions and propose a modified PQ control method to alleviate them. As a result, the output of the DGs' PQ controller synchronizes with the output of the DG voltage forming unit's V/f controller to transition from islanded to grid-connected mode.…”
