Purpose This paper aims to investigate the impact of simulation laboratory on continuing education engineering students’ academic performance. Design/methodology/approach The investigation consists of establishing the student learning levels then mapping the student learning levels (knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation) through program outcomes with appropriate evaluation components. 270 continuing education students enrolled during six years were selected to be observed as part of this study. These students were divided into two subgroups, one with 135 students who were offered simulation lab (G2) and the other 135 students were not offered simulation lab (G1) in this investigation. Subsequently, a comparative analysis was carried out on these two groups to assess the student performance in multiple evaluation components with respect to student learning level and program outcome achievement. Findings It was identified that student performance in the application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation learning levels has improved for the group with simulation lab, and no change or minimal change was observed for the group without simulation lab. It was revealed that the simulation lab practice problems needs to be aligned with the theoretical concepts in the course to get a better performance from the students. Originality/value The study was conducted in one of the leading institutes with 270 students’ performance observed over a period of six years. It is the comprehensive work done on a complete program with data collated over a period of six years in multiple courses and multiple assessments.

Distant-learning engineering students (as well as those in face-to-face settings) should acquire a basic background in radiation-matter interaction physics (usually in the firsts semesters). Some members of this category of scholars may feel some degree of aversion towards these types of pure sciences-related subjects (math, physics, chemistry, etc.). In online learning scenarios, the average student is already an adult (37 years old or above) and sees no special application of the aforementioned courses in his/her current or future professional life. Besides, online institutions tend to lean too much on applet-based simulations. These animated and interactive examples, although might shed some light on the theory associated to the studied physical processes, they also seem stripped down versions of the real events and are felt as disconnected from current scientific environments and engineering settings. For this reason, we describe a novel virtual lab approach to teach the basics of the low-energy interactions present in average X-ray settings. It combines real scientific simulation frameworks with modern computing techniques such as virtualization, cloud infrastructures, containers, networking and shared collaboration environments. It also fosters the use of hugely demanded development tools and programming languages and addresses the fundamentals of digital radiography and the linked electronic standards for image storage and transmission. With this mixed approach that blends scientific concepts, healthcare and state-of-the-art software solutions, our virtual labs have proven (over a period of 5 academic terms) to be very pedagogic and attractive (technically-and scientifically-wise) to online engineering undergraduates. For the sake of completeness, we also propose a hands-on activity that mimics the geometrical peculiarities of X-ray rooms with the help of visible light and cheap materials.

En la actualidad las amenazas hacia las infraestructuras críticas están consideradas por la UE (Unión Europea) así como por otros estamentos internacionales, uno de los riesgos más graves para la estabilidad de sus estados, afectando su disfuncionalidad gravemente a la economía y la sociedad. Ello se debe, específicamente, a que los avances constantes en las tecnologías de la información y las comunicaciones se trasladan a los Sistemas de Control Industrial (SCI).Esta asociación, Tecnologías de la Información (TI), Tecnologías de la Operación (TO), otorgan una gran flexibilidad de interconexión y expansión, gracias a su escalabilidad y a la existencia de modelos en la industria, con una conectividad cada vez más simple e intuitiva. Esta conectividad, a su vez, genera escenarios complejos con una gran cantidad de sistemas componente. El uso de las redes de comunicación hace que estos sistemas sean altamente vulnerables, ya que no fueron diseñados originalmente para este tipo de expansión o formas de comunicación. En sus orígenes fueron diseñados con el propósito principal de otorgar la máxima disponibilidad de procesos. Por lo que la disponibilidad, sigue siendo el eje fundamental a proteger en los procesos adscritos a los SCI. En este trabajo, se presenta el sistema de conocimiento por experimentación real mediante células de automatización industrial (SICERCAI) , el cual aporta nuevas capacidades de investigación, desarrollo, simulación y banco de pruebas del funcionamiento de estos sistemas. A su vez, otorga capacidades de anticipación del comportamiento de un sistema en producción industrial y, como consecuencia directa, altas capacidades de ciberresiliencia. Con estas capacidades se consiguen recrear entornos industriales de carácter híbrido, siendo este aspecto el que más se asemeja a la realidad en la industria. SICERCAI, proporciona capacidades estratégicas, que otorgan soluciones para focalizar los esfuerzos y así ayudar a resolver problemas complejos que se están produciendo hoy en día en los SCI. SICERCAI suministra alternativas eficaces y eficientes para abordar la realidad de un problema planteado por la comunidad usuaria de estas células,, recreando situaciones reales, que a su vez pueden ser observadas desde puntos de vista distintos por los diferentes agentes implicados en su resolución. Como consecuencia directa, estas perspectivas proporcionadas son admitidas, bajo un enfoque sistémico y con diferentes vías de resolución. Al ser un sistema abierto a la interconexión, SICERCAI permite la construcción de diferentes CAI con componentes de los diferentes fabricantes de tecnologías industriales, pudiéndose agregar al sistema SICERCAI para cubrir el 100% de las posibilidades arquitectónicas existentes en la industria actual. De esta manera se consigue una comprensión holística de las investigaciones llevadas a cabo mediante la utilización de SICERCAI.
