VIRO: A scalable, robust and namespace independent virtual Id routing for future networks

Abstract: Abstract-In this paper we propose VIRO -a novel, virtual identifier (Id) routing paradigm for future networks. The objective is three-fold. First, VIRO directly addresses the challenges faced by the traditional layer-2 technologies such as Ethernet, while retaining its simplicity feature. Second, it provides a uniform convergence layer that integrates and unifies routing and forwarding performed by the traditional layer-2 and layer-3, as prescribed by the traditional local-area/wide-area network dichotomy. Thi… Show more

“…Routing in VIRO uses DHT-style algorithm to construct the routing tables and perform data delivery. It uses a publish-&-query mechanism to publish and query information used to build the routing tables using a round-by-round procedure [1]. Consequently, flooding is completely eliminated from both control and data planes.…”

“…To address these challenges, network researchers have proposed a number of novel non-IP based routing and/or network architectures to address some of these aforementioned challenges facing the current IP-based network architecture. While there is a handful of research proposals [1]- [4], deploying and testing these solutions at large scale on top of the existing IP-based network infrastructure is however a daunting challenge.…”

“…In order to overcome the problem caused by longest prefix matching, Y. Yu et al [11] propose a mechanism to map a whole name to a code, but it needs additional protocol to exchange codes tables between routers. Similarly, A. Singla et al [12] and S. Jain et al [13] apply the flat name (ID) to replace IP address in the future networks, their work focused on the routing mechanism, and the performance of flat name forwarding is still unsatisfactory. Some other methods try to decompose an URL into components and build a component tree to aggregate URLs [14].…”
