Abstract: When the celebrated American poet Robert Lowell incorporated letters from his ex-wife into a much debated book of poems in 1973, his technique was described as cannibalistic appropriation. And when a collection of letters between all the parties involved in the controversy was published in 2019 critics pointed at Vigdis Hjorth and Karl Ove Knausgård as examples of authors who use the same technique of appropriation.
