Virgin coconut oil protects against liver damage in albino rats challenged with the anti-folate combination, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole

Abstract: The results of this study demonstrate that the active components of coconut oil had protective effects against the toxic effects induced by TMP-SMX administration, especially in the liver of rats.

“…Virgin coconut oil supplementation prevents lipid peroxidation in the cardiac tissue of rats fed heated palm oil (Subermaniam et al, 2014). Recent experimental studies have indicated the hepatoprotective potential of VCO supplementation in animal models Otuechere et al, 2013). In fact, a recent study by Kamisah et al (2015) demonstrated the VCO cardioprotective effect in heated palm oil diet-induced hypertensive rats.…”

“…VCO increases the metabolism and therefore support weight management (Liau, Lee, Chen, & Rasool, 2011). Protective effect of VCO against liver damage in albino rats challenged with the anti-folate combination, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX), was studied by Otuechere, Madarikan, Simisola, Bankole, and Osho (2014). The active components of VCO had protective effects against the toxic effects induced by TMP-SMX administration, mainly in the liver of rats.…”

“…Likewise g-GT activity was not adversely affected in all treatment groups, so this precluded the hepatobiliary system as the source of the elevated ALP. This observed increase in ALP and AST could be more of physiological than pathological as a result of the high fatty acid content of the FHA [46] . FTIR spectroscopy showed that FHA based on C. esculentus seed oil was successfully prepared.…”
