VIRAL SLAM: Tightly Coupled Camera-IMU-UWB-Lidar SLAM

Thien-Minh Nguyen,
Shenghai Yuan,
Muqing Cao
et al.

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a tightly-coupled, multimodal simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) framework, integrating an extensive set of sensors: IMU, cameras, multiple lidars, and Ultra-wideband (UWB) range measurements, hence referred to as VIRAL (visual-inertial-ranginglidar) SLAM. To achieve such a comprehensive sensor fusion system, one has to tackle several challenges such as data synchronization, multi-threading programming, bundle adjustment (BA), and conflicting coordinate frames between UWB an… Show more

“…A further plan is to combine the camera with UWB/IMU/Odometer IPSs to enable mapping so that this system can operate well in harsh and unstructured environments. The fusion of these sensors can also overcome the problem of cameras failing to find feature points in single environments, leading to positioning failure [ 30 ].…”

“…The authors of [ 67 ] proposed a multi-modal system titled VIRAL (Visual-Inertial-Ranging-LiDAR) SLAM that couples camera, LiDAR, IMU, and UWB. They also presented a map-matching marginalization scheme for visual features based on the local map constructed from LiDAR point clouds.…”
