Vimentin expression in circulating tumor cells (CTCs) associated with liver metastases predicts poor progression-free survival in patients with advanced lung cancer

Abstract: ObjectiveTo investigate the presence of vimentin expression in CTCs and its clinical relevance in patients with advanced lung cancer.MethodsPeripheral blood was obtained from 61 treatment-naive patients with advanced lung cancer. Subtraction enrichment and immunostaining-fluorescence in situ hybridization (SE-iFISH) platform was applied to identify, enumerate and characterize CTCs based on cell size, aneuploidy of chromosome 8 (Chr8) and vimentin expression. Quantification and analysis of CTCs were performed o… Show more

“…EpCAM + aneuploid rare cells in peripheral blood and BM significantly correlated with systemic metastasis in breast cancer patients [ 82 ]. Moreover, Vimentin + lung cancer rare cells at baseline were relevant to hepatic metastasis [ 145 ]. Furthermore, postsurgical small EpCAM + multiploid rare cells in circulation were found to correlate with HCC patients’ postoperative recurrence [ 83 ].…”

“…Circulating tumour cells (CTCs) analysis has recently emerged as a liquid biopsy approach for the early diagnosis [1,2], biomarker [3], evaluation of curative efficacy [4], evaluation of relapse [5] and prognostic prediction [6,7] in several solid tumours, including breast cancer [8,9],gastric cancer [10], prostate cancer [11], head and neck cancer [12], bladder cancer [13], and lung cancer [14][15][16]. CTCs also showed the potential efficacy in metastasis cancer, such as metastatic breast cancer [17,18] and colorectal cancer [19].…”
