Village Level Provisioning Ecosystem Services and Their Values to Local Communities in the Peri-Urban Areas of Manila, The Philippines

Abstract: This study investigates different provisioning services in the peri-urban landscapes of Manila conurbation through a case study of two villages in the Jala-Jala municipality of the Laguna de Bay area in the Philippines. Laguna de Bay is an ecologically productive and important watershed for the urban and peri-urban areas of Manila for the provision of food, freshwater, and other materials. However, the lake and its ecosystem are under threat because of rapid urbanization and associated land-use changes. This s… Show more

“…The idle land in Figures 3 and 4 would be returned to agricultural productivity that in some way represents a new Agropolis [94], a move towards buying local, and the socalled Pathum Thani Market 4.0 [103]. It is possible that some of these new agricultural opportunities could be integrated with housing developments as a form of community gardens [104,105] to enhance community resiliency through greater food security and diversified economic opportunities, but also to increase sustainability of the peri-urban mosaic.…”

“…In China, the transformation from traditional crops in PUAs to mixed fruit production accompanied by tourism has produced significant changes in agroecosystem services [8]. Simultaneously, some research has also argued that the diminishing of peri-urban open spaces or the increase in built-up land have negatively influenced ES [51,52]. Research indicates that landscape change in PUAs has led to trade-offs and synergies of ES in agroecosystems [53], suggesting that the increased availability of economic and social services comes at the cost of supporting and regulating services [51].…”
