Recently, researches on discovery science and knowledge discovery have been carried out in various fields. Basically they are types of learning that learn tendencies from the sets of data of the same or similar categories. In this sense, discovery is to discover the tendencies. As a result, they cannot predict the events that are different from the trend. On the other hand, abduction is thought of as an explanatory reasoning. Indeed, abduction is a reasoning to generate hypotheses to explain an observation. However, the original meaning of abduction was to discover new things that cannot be known in a simple way. In this paper, abduction is defined using the original definition that discovers something that cannot be easily predicted. Then, this paper shows a role of abduction that can suggest or foresee the events that are different from the trend. In fact, Abductive Analogical Reasoning that can generate new hypotheses is adopted to solve the problem.

SUMMARYIf a knowledge base does not have all of the necessary clauses for reasoning, ordinary hypothetical reasoning systems cannot explain observations. In this case, it is necessary to explain such observations by abductive reasoning, supplemental reasoning, or approximate reasoning. The inference in this paper explains the observation by supplementing missing knowledge with reference to similar knowledge when an observation cannot be explained because necessary knowledge is lacking. However, it is somewhat difficult to find clauses to explain an observation without hints. Therefore, an abductive strategy (CMS) is used to find missing clauses. A piece of knowledge which is similar to the missing knowledge is sought in the knowledge base and mapped to the knowledge in the same problem domain as the missing knowledge. Then the observation is explained by generated hypotheses similar to the knowledge in the knowledge base. © 1999 Scripta Technica, Syst Comp Jpn, 31(1): 1119, 2000

When applying abductive hypotheses, sometimes it is inadequate to use a simplicity criterion, i.e. "Occam's Razor", and sometimes this causes serious problems. We have developed a framework for abductive reasoning called Abductive Analogical Reasoning. It tries to overcome this inadequateness and generates plausible clauses to explain an observation. However, in some contexts, since meaning of a word changes, it is rather dificult to generate plausible clauses without considering the context. In this paper, I will show the significant role of context in selecting abductive hypotheses and will present a strategy for context retrieval from the clauses that are to be used in an inference. In additon, I will show the possibility of performing the context depending abduction in IMDJ.
