Viewing Angle Control of a Fringe-Field Switching Cell by Electrical Tilting of Liquid Crystal

Abstract: We show that a molecular combing process can be used to fabricate in parallel, in one step, a large number of co-planar carbon nanotube hybrid molecular transistors. The gate voltage is applied by the electrodes of a nanojunction thus increasing the miniaturisation of the device. We show with such devices that the bias coplanar grid is not very active on metal-like nanotubes and that the same conductance change can be obtained by deforming the tube by the tip of an atomic force microscope. On the contrary, the… Show more

“…These approaches for the compensation were directly applicable to the IPS-or FFS-based VAC LCDs in the configuration of the three terminal electrodes. [10][11][12] However, in the FFS mode, using the tilted LC molecules by a biased vertical field for the extreme NVA property, 11 the optical compensation to enhance the WVA property also improved the NVA property. In addition, the contours with maximum contrast ratio shifted from the center of the polar chart to an edge corresponding to the LC-tilted direction.…”

“…The structure of three terminal electrodes was used for operating the VAC LCD in the single panel. [10][11][12] Here, the conventional FFS operation exhibited the WVA characteristics, while the NVA mode was obtained by the vertical field between the top and bottom electrodes under varying FFS voltages. To investigate effects of optical compensation on the viewing angle characteristics in the NVA mode, two basic designs of the optical compensation for the IPS or FFS modes are discussed: the configurations of the positive A-plate/positive C-plate (AC), and the positive A-plate/negative A-plate (AA).…”

“…For numerical calculation of the electro-optic characteristics of the proposed structure, we employ a commercial software package "TechWiz LCD 3D" (Sanayi System). We have chosen the standard optical setup used in other references [12]. The rubbing direction () of the LC cell is set at 5° with respect to the patterned electrode.…”

“…Other approaches are to realize the viewing angle control function without additional panel by using the pixel division method, in which one pixel is divided into two sub pixels for displaying the main image and controlling viewing angle [23][24][25][26][27][28], or by using three-terminal electrodes to control the gray scale together with viewing angle [29][30][31][32]. However, these methods need additional electronic circuits and electrodes within a pixel, which reduce the aperture ratio and light efficiency.…”
