VieSched++: A New VLBI Scheduling Software for Geodesy and Astrometry

Abstract: We present a new Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) scheduling software called VieSched++, which is a stand-alone tool of the Vienna VLBI and Satellite Software (VieVS). The scheduler is written in C++ and aims to be flexible and easy to use, with a modern graphical user interface while creating high-quality schedules. In this work, the general design concepts of the scheduling software are discussed and the major scheduling algorithms are explained. Additionally, deep insight into the optimization crite… Show more

“…For the period December 2019 through February 2020 in total twelve VGOS-B sessions were scheduled. The scheduling was done with the software VieSched++ (Schartner and Böhm 2019) involving the VGOS stations ISHIOKA (Is) in Japan and ONSA13NE (Oe) and ONSA13SW (Ow) in Sweden. The schedules were prepared to be simultaneous to standard INT1 observations.…”

“…The optimization of the schedules can be achieved using VieSched++ (Schartner and Böhm 2019) and in particular its multi-scheduling feature. For geodetic VLBI scheduling and in particular for VGOS scheduling, a proper selection of the so-called weight factors (Schartner and Böhm 2019) is elementary for generating an optimized schedule (Schartner and Böhm 2020).…”

“…The idle time optimization criterion is mostly used as a precaution to make sure that every station is observing regularly. It gradually increases the probability of scheduling scans containing stations that were previously not scheduled for a longer period (Schartner and Böhm 2019).…”
