Abstract-Video streaming on smartphone consumes lots of energy. One common solution is to download and buffer future video data for playback so that the wireless interface can be turned off most of time and then save energy. However, this may waste energy and bandwidth if the user skips or quits before the end of the video. Using a small buffer can reduce the bandwidth wastage, but may consume more energy and introduce rebuffering delay. In this paper, we analyze the power consumption during video streaming considering user skip and early quit scenarios. We first propose an offline method to compute the minimum power consumption, and then introduce an online solution to save energy based on whether the user tends to watch video for a long time or tends to skip. We have implemented the online solution on Android based smartphones. Experimental results and trace-driven simulation results show that that our method can save energy while achieving a better tradeoff between delay and bandwidth compared to existing methods.

Content discovery is a major source of latency in peer-to-peer (P2P) media streaming systems, especially in the presence of noncontinuous user access, such as random seek in Video-on-Demand (VoD) streaming and teleportation in a Networked Virtual Environment (NVE). After the aforementioned user interactions, streaming systems often need to initiate the content discovery process to identify where to retrieve the requested media objects. Short content lookup latency is demanded to ensure smooth user experience. Existing content discovery systems based on either a Distributed Hash Table (DHT) or gossip mechanism cannot cope with noncontinuous access efficiently due to their long lookup latency.In this work, we propose an access-pattern-driven distributed caching middleware named APRICOD, which caters for fast and scalable content discovery in peer-to-peer media streaming systems, especially when user interactions are present. APRICOD exploits correlations among media objects accessed by users, and adapts to shift in the user access pattern automatically. We first present a general APRICOD design that can be used with any existing content discovery system. We then present an implementation of APRICOD on top of Pastry, which we use to evaluate APRICOD. Our evaluation in a 1024-node system, using a Second Life trace with 5, 735 users and a VoD trace with 54 users, shows that APRICOD can effectively resolve all continuous access queries with a single hop deterministically with node failure as an exception, and resolve noncontinuous access queries with a single hop with high probability.

In this paper, we propose a method for improving the playback quality of one segment terrestrial television broadcasting (called 1seg, hereafter) at mobile terminals staying in a weak 1seg radio reception area (called WRA terminals) by wireless multi-hop video streaming from terminals in strong 1seg radio area (called SRA terminals). First, we formulate the problem to derive the set of video forwarding paths that maximize the number of WRA terminals to be "relieved" by receiving the forwarded video, under the constraints on the wireless bandwidth and the maximum number of hops. Since this problem is NP-hard and deriving the optimal solution in real-time is infeasible, we propose a greedy algorithm that each WRA terminal find a video forwarding path from a SRA terminal receiving the required 1seg channel based on the information periodically exchanged among neighboring terminals. In order to increase the number of relieved terminals, we introduce a technique to let a SRA terminal change its watching 1seg channel, forward the video to a WRA terminal, and ask for the relief for itself. Through computer simulations, we confirme that the proposed algorithm with 2-hop relief paths improved the video playback quality in more than 60% of the total WRA staying time.
