This study focuses on a close examination of how children express themselves at ECEC in play situations, which form an integral and large part of a typical day. The main research question has been: How can children’s social and emotional expressions be understood through analyses of communication and interaction during free play? A qualitative approach has been deemed suitable for this study, since it can provide insight into children’s social interaction and engagement with their peers and with ECEC staff, in their natural, everyday ECEC environment. The study was carried out at eight different ECEC centres and one pre-school at various locations in the Swedish-speaking regions of Finland. At the time of observation, the group sizes at the ECEC centres and the pre-school ranged from about 10 to 20 children, aged 3–6. The analysis showed an overarching category of exclusion in play, and in the article we present examples of how children limit each other during play. This is done through imposing limits in play through favouritism by prioritising certain children above others. The article exemplifies this with detailed analysis of play situations showing children’s verbal favouritism as well as clear exclusion of other children. The results highlight the need of discussing the issue more in depth.

In this reflective methodological paper we focus on affordances and challenges of video data. We compare and analyze two research settings that use the latest video technology to capture classroom interactions in mathematics education, namely, The Social Unit of Learning (SUL) project of the University of Melbourne and the MathTrack project of the University of Helsinki. While using these two settings as examples, we have structured our reflections around themes pertinent to video research in general, namely, research methods, data management, and research ethics. SUL and MathTrack share an understanding of mathematics learning as social multimodal practice, and provide possibilities for zooming into the situational micro interactions that construct collaborative problem-solving learning. Both settings provide rich data for in-depth analyses of peer interactions and learning processes. The settings share special needs for technical support and data management, as well as attention to ethical aspects from the perspective of the participants’ security and discretion. SUL data are especially suitable for investigating interactions on a broad scope, addressing how multiple interactional processes intertwine. MathTrack, on the other hand, enables exploration of participants’ visual attention in detail and its role in learning. Both settings could provide tools for teachers’ professional development by showing them aspects of classroom interactions that would otherwise remain hidden.

The article analyzes the results of the educational project "Collection of poems about the Great Patriotic War", carried out by students of Pskov State University in 2010 -2021. Seventeen created collections allow you to see the diverse impact of modernization of the educational field in general and digitalization in particular, on the work of students on the project, as well as on the presentation of its results. First, over time, the editorial skills of students developed, since the problem of attribution of texts and the need to verify information obtained on network resources became more and more familiar to students. Secondly, the availability of digital technologies was reflected in the change in the appearance of collections: the share and variability of visualization elements increased significantly. Third, the emotional labeling of war fiction contributed to the development of emotional intelligence, and engagement in the work stimulated the desire to display its results in different venues. Fourth, the project (an independent selection of poems) gave students a new form of broadcasting historical memory. Fifth, over the years, the topics of the collections have been concretized and individualized, i.e. the creative component of the editorial board grew. During the work on the project, the student readers turned out to be not passive consumers of artistic information, but independent and full-fledged participants in the cultural and historical process, using for this the form of a book of poems that is relevant in modern literature, the editors of which they acted during the project.
