Vibrotactile Stimulation: An Investigation of Psychophysical Methods for Establishing Threshold

Abstract: This investigation was designed to adopt and evaluate the psychophysical method of limits and method of adjustment using ascending and descending stimuli series to obra~n oral vibrotactile thresholds on the anterior midline surface of the tongue. A significant difference in vibrotactile thresholds was not found with either the method of limits or the method of adjustment. The differences between ascending and descending thresholds were also not significant. n o w , M. Studies of rhe sense ot vibration 1. Varia… Show more

“…This finding appears to conflict with the data of Verrillo (1966Verrillo ( , 1968 but is consistent with some of the data of Fucci and his colleagues (e.g., Fucci & Petrosino, 1982;Hall, Fucci, & Arnst, 1972;Telage et al, 1972). One interesting feature of Verrillo's (1968) lingual data, however, is that the presence of a surround did not significantly decrease the sensitivity to high-frequency vibration.…”

“…The initial focus concerned investigating psychophysical parameters involved in presenting the vibratory signal to the midline of the anterior lingual surface. Hall, Fucci, and Arnst (1972) found no differences between data obtained with either the method of limits or the method of adjustment. Differences between ascending and descending thresholds obtained with pulsed stimulation were also found to be insignificant.…”

“…Table 1 shows the vibrotactile thresholds in microns for normal-speaking and sibilant-defective children. The differential response to frequency was significant and conformed to earlier studies of adults (Fucci, Hall, & Arnst, 1972). A t each frequency, a t rest was performed between groups.…”

“…The stimi~lus and nieasurement units were essentially identical to those employed by Fucci and colleagiies (1972;Hall, Fucci, & Arnst, 1972;Fucci, Hall, & Weiner, 1971). The stimulus unit contained a sine wave generator, frequency counter, electronic switch, attenuator, amplifier, and shaker.…”
