Vibron Quasibound State in the Noncentrosymmetric Tetragonal Heavy-Fermion CompoundCeCuAl3

Abstract: We have investigated the noncentrosymmetric tetragonal heavy-fermion antiferromagnetic compound CeCuAl3 (T(N)=2.5 K) using inelastic neutron scattering (INS). Our INS results unequivocally reveal the presence of three magnetic excitations centered at 1.3, 9.8, and 20.5 meV. These spectral features cannot be explained within the framework of crystal-electric-field models and recourse to Kramers' theorem for a 4f(1) Ce(3+) ion. To overcome these interpretational difficulties, we have generalized the vibron model… Show more

“…Such CEF-phonon coupling has been detected in CeCuAl 3 , which has a similar crystal structure to CeRhGe 3 , where three CEF excitations from the ground state are clearly observed. 40 The scattering at the highest Q is comparable for CeRhGe 3 and LaRhGe 3 , which indicates similar phonon contributions in these compounds. This can be seen clearly in the 1D cuts made from the 2D color plots at low Q from 0 to 4Å −1 and at high Q from 5 to 9Å −1 (see Fig.…”

“…Particularly interesting are those systems where strong CEF-phonon (or spin-phonon) coupling exists. Recently, we have investigated the noncentrosymmetric tetragonal CeCuAl 3 compound using inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and found the presence of three excitations in the paramagnetic phase at 1.25, 10, and 20 meV [23]. Based on Kramer's theorem, we cannot expect more than two CEF excitations for Ce 3+ (4f 1 ) in the paramagnetic phase.…”

“…Based on Kramer's theorem, we cannot expect more than two CEF excitations for Ce 3+ (4f 1 ) in the paramagnetic phase. The observed three CEF excitations in CeCuAl 3 have been explained based on the CEF-phonon coupling model (called magnetoelastic coupling) [23]. In order to investigate whether or not the CEF-phonon coupling is also present in other members of the noncentrosymmetric compounds with the general formula CeTX 3 , we are currently investigating several compounds of this family using INS [10][11][12]23].…”

“…The vibron state was observed recently also in antiferromagnetically ordered CeCuAl 3 compound [1]. Although numerous studies were done, magnetic ground state of this compound remains unknown.…”

“…The powder neutron diraction data shows the ordered BaNiSn 3 -type structure [4]. Subsequently many further papers adopt the BaNiSn 3 structure [1]. On the other hand, some recent studies stated again the BaAl 4 structure [5].…”
