Vibrational spectra of decacarbonyldimanganese and its halogen and mercury derivatives

Abstract: Raman and i.r. spectra are reported and assigned for the compounds Mn2(CO)lo. Mn(CO),X (X = CI or Br), and Hg [M n ( C O ) 51 2.

“…More recently, Burlitch and Ferrari4 have reported an improved synthesis of this compound. There have been several studies of the infrared and Raman spectra of Hg[Mn(CO)s]2.8, [11][12][13] All of the data are consistent with a linear Mn-Hg-Mn framework and a molecular symmetry of Dih or Did.i0 In a more recent infrared study of substituted derivatives of the type Hg[Mn(CO)4L]2, the author proposed a bent Mn-Hg-Mn framework based on solution spectral data. 14 Because there has been interest in the structure and reactivity of this compound and since there have been no X-ray structural studies of compounds containing mercury-manganese bonds,21,22 we have undertaken this study to gain further insight into the stereochemistry and bonding in this type of compound.…”

“…While Hg[Mn(CO) 5 ] 2 was first synthesized in 1960 by Hieber and Schropp [26], its lighter homologues, M[Mn(CO) 5 ] 2 (M=Zn, Cd), were prepared in 1968 by Burlitch [27]. Later on, some alternative procedures were also reported to synthesize these complexes [28][29][30][31][32]. They were characterized by IR and/or Raman spectroscopic studies which suggest that these complexes possess highly symmetric D 4h or D 4d structures.…”

“…range below 500 cm-' (6). More recent investigations into the Raman spectra of carbonyl complexes indicate that the v(MC) vibrations often give rise to intense absorption bands, whereas the 6(MCO) modes may be very weak (7). For such complex and asymmetric compounds it can be pointed out that labelling of bands as pure 6(MCO) or v(MC) is inaccurate, as all of these vibrations are to some extent mixed.…”
