Vibrational spectra of clioquinol and its Cu(II) complex

Abstract: The infrared and Raman spectra of 5-chloro-7-iodo-8-hydroxyquinoline (clioquinol, CQ) and that of its Cu(II) complex of stoichiometry [Cu(CQ) 2 ] were recorded and briefly discussed. Some comparisons were made with related complexes. The interest of the investigated systems in relation to Alzheimer's disease is briefly commented.

“…The vibrations attributed to m(C=N) at 1587-1604 cm -1 in the infrared spectra of the free bases shift to 1546-1566 cm -1 in the spectra of complexes (1-3), in agreement with coordination of the nitrogen (Wagner et al 2007). The in-plane deformation mode of the pyridine ring at 575-634 cm -1 in the spectra of the free hydroxyquinolines shifts to 636-647 cm -1 in complexes (1-3), suggesting coordination of the heteroaromatic nitrogen (Wagner et al 2007).…”

The m(C-O) absorption observed at 1059-1084 cm -1 in the spectra of the uncomplexed HQN derivatives shifts to 1085-1097 cm -1 in the spectra of complexes (1-3), indicating coordination of the oxygen (Yurdakul and Arýcý 2004).…”

“…3. The proposed assignment, presented in Table 4, was performed on the basis of some standard references [29,30] and with the help of results derived from previous investigations of 8-quinolinol [31][32][33][34], halogenated derivatives of 8-quinolinol [34] and our recent spectroscopic investigation of clioquinol [11]. The results are briefly commented, as follows:…”

“…Particularly, in the context of Alzheimer's disease, clioquinol (5-chloro-7-iodo-8-quinolinol) has been suggested to be specially useful as a chelating agent for the control of pathological metal metabolism in the brain [4,[7][8][9][10]. It forms relatively stable complexes with Cu(II) and Zn(II) whose structures [10] and spectroscopic properties [11] have been recently reported.…”
