Vibration Welding of Amorphous Thermoplastic Nanocomposites

Abstract: Polycarbonate (PC) nanoclay composites and noryl nanoclay composites were prepared by melt blending technique both in presence and absence of compatibilizer. The compatibilizer used for dispersing nanoclay in PC was poly (caprolactone) (PCL). In case of noryl, polystyrene (PS) was used as a compatibilizer. The nanoclay used in this study is Cloisite 20 A. The main aim in utilizing the nanoclay was to improve the mechanical properties and reduce the viscosity of the amorphous thermoplastic nanocomposites. Vibra… Show more

“…The weld strength of nanocomposites was lower especially at high weld pressure compared to that of virgin polypropylene. By contrast, in the study of Das et al , they found that polycarbonate and noryl nanocomposites prepared in the presence of compatibilizer showed improved weld strengths compared with that of pure polymers. However, no work on the vibration welding of carbon nanotubes, which are in two dimensions in nanoscale, reinforced thermoplastics has been reported.…”

“…Previous studies on vibration welding of nanocomposite materials are very sparse, which were focused on nanoclay that is in one dimension in nanoscale and nanoparticles such as titania and silica reinforced thermoplastics. These studies investigated the impacts of welding parameters, that is, weld pressure, amplitude, and filler content, on the weld strength of nanocomposite materials.…”

“…C. Das et.al stated that the composites were prepared both in presence and absence of compatibilizer. The presence of compatibilizers having high performance while compared to absence of compatibilizers [5,6]. The compatibilizer helps to improve the bonding of nanoclay in base polymer matrix.…”
