VIALACTEA knowledge base homogenizing access to Milky Way data

Abstract: The VIALACTEA project has a work package dedicated to "Tools and Infrastructure" and, inside it, a task for the "Database and Virtual Observatory Infrastructure". This task aims at providing an infrastructure to store all the resources needed by the, more purposely, scientific work packages of the project itself. This infrastructure includes a combination of: storage facilities, relational databases and web services on top of them, and has taken, as a whole, the name of VIALACTEA Knowledge Base (VLKB). This co… Show more

“…If two main sets of "R 0 , θ 0 " emerge (the IAU standard one and the R 0 , θ 0 = 8.34 kpc, 240 km s −1 ) for U , V , and W , no general agreement, especially for V , is brought out. However, because in the frame of the Hi-GAL survey we use source velocity extracted from different l, b, V LSR data cubes (Molinaro et al 2016) we can expect that, by default, their V LSR is calculated with the U , V , W IAU standard.…”

“…In the context of the Vialactea Project 1 a large number of molecular data cubes, covering the full galactic plane, have been compiled (Molinaro et al 2016) from which velocity for the HiGAL sources are extracted (Mège et al, in prep.). To convert this velocity into kinematic distance we need to adopt a rotation curve for our Galaxy.…”

“…The entire catalogue is available at the the website http://vialactea. iaps.inaf.it/ and it is part of the VIALACTEA Knowledge Base (Molinaro et al 2016). The filaments and substructures of the catalogue can be visualized on the Hi-GAL data through the VIALACTEA Client that also allows queries of their physical properties.…”

“…The Hi-GAL filamentary feature catalogue is hosted in the VIALACTEA knowledge base (Molinaro et al 2016) 1 and is composed of three tables, one for each of the features defined in the article: entire candidate regions, branches and singular points.…”

“…The extraction of the meaningful information contained in the available data required an entirely new approach (the new paradigm of "data-driven scientific discovery") which resulted in a novel framework [1] based on advanced visual analytic techniques [2], data mining methodologies [3], machine learning paradigms [4] and Virtual Observatory (VO) based data representation and retrieval standards [5]. All the underlying pipelines required by this framework (e.g.…”
