VHF Data Exchange System (VDES): an enabling technology for maritime communications

Abstract: This work presents an overview of the radio interface of VHF Data Exchange System (VDES), which is currently on its way to become an ITU standard supported by International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities. VDES includes the already existing collision avoidance tracking system Automatic Identification System and the messaging system Application Specific Messages. Additionally, a new third component for digital maritime communications of any kind, named VHF Data Exchange is in… Show more

“…Maritime shipping is currently undergoing rapid digitalization. The introduction of new communication technologies onboard ships, such as the upcoming VHF Data Exchange System (VDES) [21], enables a wide variety of new digital services, such as digital ship reporting, electronic port clearance, search and rescue communications, vessel traffic services and broadcast of maritime safety information. These services will all require information security, and a prevalent solution to establish and deploy a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) for distributing digital certificates and securing the integrity and confidentiality of the information exchange.…”
