Vessel-Based, Shallow Water Mapping with a Phase-Measuring Sidescan Sonar

Abstract: Coastal areas have traditionally been difficult locations to collect consistent, high-resolution bathymetric data via vessel-based acoustic surveys. The use of phase-measuring sidescan sonar is becoming more prevalent, particularly in shallow (< 20 m) coastal waters. Instruments used in the field over the last decade by the lead author are discussed here. This work is intended to serve as an introduction to the coastal scientist interested in the operation, use, and data sets associated with these instruments.… Show more

“…The radial basis function (rbf) kernel was chosen for the SVM, with C and gamma values set to 1000 and 0.0001, respectively. The selected feature space dimension consisted of seven textural gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) features [44] (homogeneity, entropy, ang. 2nd moment, mean, correlation, dissimilarity, standard deviation) and eight spectral features (mean red, mean green, mean blue, maximum difference, brightness, standard deviation red, standard deviation green, standard deviation blue).…”

“…The temporal behavior of the errors is of utmost importance in position estimation using GPS. The study of the relative variability of the errors leads us to postulate certain algorithms and approaches for precise and post-mission satellite information [5].…”

“…Coastal seabed mapping and bathymetry restitution is a key issue for environmental and human activities, including evolution of morphodynamic features (dunes, ripples), coral reef structures, marine habitat characteristics, navigation safety, coastal protection, etc. Coastal bathymetry is mainly performed using multi-beam echo-sounder (MBES) with possible combination with side-scan sonar (e.g., [1][2][3]) or bathymetric LiDAR (e.g., [4][5][6]). Both are active remote sensing techniques: MBES uses acoustic signal emitted from a boat, whereas LiDAR uses optical signal emitted from an aircraft.…”
